Pleasantville Swim Team - Special Announcements! 2008 |
||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
** ** Welcome to Pleasantville Swimming The Pleasantville Swim Team is a summer recreation program. The team competes in Division I of the Northern Westchester Swimming Conference (NWSC) which is comprised of 5 divisions. Division I is the most competitive Division and contains the top public and private clubs in the area. Boys and girls, 6 to 18, who are residents of Pleasantville, are eligible for the program. All swimmers will be required to complete a medical clearance form before participating (Medical Form is attached). Swimmers who require inhalers should have them available at practices and meets and make the coaches aware of their condition. A full schedule of "A" and "B" meets provides opportunities for everyone on the team to compete. No prior competitive experience is necessary, but swimmers must be able to complete a full 25 yards (one length of the pool) by the end of the weekend practices in June. There will be mandatory parent meetings on Saturday May 31st beginning for the parents of the younger swimmers at 3:30 PM, and the parents of the 11 and older swimmers at 4:30 PM. An overview of the season and the rules of swimming in the NWSC will be discussed as well as a question and answer period for new and returning parents. Practice Guidelines Practices are very important to swimmers' conditioning and improvement over the course of the season. The coaches should be alerted if a swimmer has to miss practice for an extended period, due to illness, injury or other personal situation. Practices will begin indoors at the Boys and Girls Club in Mount Kisco. Parents should be aware that younger siblings who are not members of the team are NOT allowed on the pool deck at the Boys and Girls Club. These early practices are designed to teach and evaluate new and returning swimmers. It is a good idea for some of the returning swimmers that did not swim during the winter to use these practices to ease them back into swimming. The outdoor practices begin during the week of June 16th at the Pleasantville Pool; see the attached schedule. Practice will consist of some dry land training (running and safe exercise), stretching and swimming. All swimmers should come prepared to practice with: sneakers, goggles towel, swim cap and water and/or Gatorade. On chilly mornings and afternoons please bring sweat shirts and warm-up pants. Practices will be held during light rain or drizzle. Meet Guidelines The season consists of "A" and "B" meets. The meets start the first week of July and run through the first week in August. As the schedule clearly shows, the team requires a major commitment of time through the first week of August. Please make note of the dates for meets and plan accordingly. The team needs to have all of its swimmers available to compete at the Division I level. "A" meets are run by paid officials, who judge the starts, turns, finishes and strokes of the swimmers. Points and ribbons are awarded, and scores are totaled for the competing teams to determine the winner. There are six teams in Division I and only 5 regular season meets. Swimmers scheduled to swim in an "A" meet must make these five regular season meets and the championship meet a priority. Swimmers will be selected for "A" meets based on their performance and participation. Three swimmers in each stroke will swim in an "A" meet (in four lane pools two swimmers will swim). The coaches work very hard to be fair and time the swimmers as much as possible in practice to determine who will swim. If a swimmer who is scheduled to swim doesn't attend it not only hurts the whole team but a swimmer that could have participated. "B" meets are unofficial and are designed to allow swimmers to gain experience in competition. There are no disqualifications, and ribbons are awarded to all finishers. A swimmer that has come in 1st, 2nd or 3rd in an "A" meet may not participate in a "B" meet. Swimmers must arrive at a meet 15 minutes before warm-up time. A heavy meal should not be eaten prior to a meet and food such as pizza, hot dogs, donuts etc should not be eaten during the meet, as well as any carbonated soda's or other soft drinks. For more information on nutrition for your swimmer please see Mindy Berard. Come prepared to a meet with your team suit, cap, towel, goggles and water and/or Gatorade. Meets may be cancelled by heavy rain or thunderstorms. Meets may be held through a light rain or drizzle. We follow the same weather guidelines for outdoor practices.
Scoring at Dual Meets Teams are awarded points for 1 st through 4 th place finishers. Points are scored 5-3-2-1. If both teams have entries, no more than two places can be scored per team. No team can sweep – that is, take points for 1 st, 2 nd, and 3 rd – if the other team has a swimmer or diver. One problem that plagues many swim teams is the lack of older swimmers. For this reason, the coach often puts younger swimmers into events for higher age groups. As long as the swimmer does not get disqualified, he or she will collect points for 3 rd place, even if the swimmer finished in 4 th. If the swimmer does get DQ’ed, he or she will not get points for 3 rd place, but neither will the other team. Meets can be won or lost by points scored this way.
